When sealing a centrifugal pump, the challenge is to allow a rotating shaft to enter the ‘wet’ area of the pump, without allowing large volumes of pressurized fluid to escape. We use mechanical seals to stop any visible leakage. A seal will leak vapour as the fluid film on the faces reaches the atmospheric side of the seal faces, but any visible leakage will be non-existent. Corrosion of plant equipment is also at a minimum if the product is contained within a pump. Overall a seal is the best way to go. They will provide prevent wasted product resulting in reduced costs.
